Plant Systematics

More than 22,500 plant species (see Digital Flora of Indonesiaoccur in Indonesia. However, research on plant systematics is slow compared to the loss of natural habitat in many places in this archipelagic country. As part of the global effort to understand the plant diversity on earth, I conducted basic systematics research like taxonomy and other related aspects. Some milestones of research in this topic include:

  • Discovery of 28 plant species new to science from several families: Ericaceae, Orchidaceae, Aristolochiaceae, Myrtaceae, Begoniaceae
  • New records of plants between islands in Indonesia or country records
  • Rediscovery and taxonomic placement of Indonesian plant species
  • Publications of plant identification guidebooks
  • Publication of book for plant systematics teaching in university with focus on Indonesia plant species

New species names can be found in the author’s page in International Plant Name Index (IPNI) here (go to link).

Featured Projects

Asian bluebbery project

A project led by Maverick N. Tamayo to study the diversity and evolution of the Vaccinium and related genera. Through this collaborative work, we successfully found two new species of blueberry relatives, i.e. Rigiolepis gayoensis and another new species soon to be published.

Flora of Indonesia checklist

The checklist presents the currently known species of plants from Indonesia, the largest country in the Malesia phytogeographical region. Prepared based on bibliographical review as well as recent observations, the checklist should be considered as preliminary, i.e. contains errors and incomplete information. A total number of 22,650+ vascular plant species already listed on the website.
